Each collection created by Josefinas is inspired by a powerful woman. And Josefinas Roses is no exception!

This special edition, available for order after joining a waiting list, is inspired by Rose Schneiderman, an American feminist. We believe in giving voice to these stories, so here are some interesting facts about Rose:

• Rose was born in Poland in 1882. At the age of eight, Rose immigrated with her family to New York.
• In New York, Rose became known as a socialist and a feminist. She was very vocal about women’s labor rights.
• Rose also became a suffragette and member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. She helped pass the New York state referendum of 1917 that gave women the right to vote.
• “The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too” was part of a speech she made. It became a famous political slogan and symbol of resistance. Her speech was even made into a poem and translated into music later on.

On these sneakers you’ll see nine embroidered roses, a literal tribute to her name. Together, they symbolize dignified work conditions for working women, something Rose fought hardly for. She believed good and worthy work conditions for women were as essential as the need to eat.
